Penny Thompson of Edina, 7-year-old girl, killed after being hit by SUV while bike riding in Minnesota

Minneapolis – The Minneapolis community is in mourning following a devastating incident in which a seven-year-old girl lost her life after being struck by an SUV while riding her bike in front of her family’s south Minneapolis residence. The victim, identified as Penelope Wender Thompson, was remembered as a “fun-loving and spirited” young girl who touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

The tragic accident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. on Monday, on the 5600 block of Second Avenue South. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, Penelope suffered multiple blunt force injuries due to the collision between her bicycle and the sport utility vehicle. Despite immediate efforts to save her, she tragically passed away shortly after 9 a.m. at Hennepin Healthcare.

Minneapolis Police reported that the driver of the SUV, a 39-year-old man who resides nearby, immediately stopped and rushed to provide aid to Penelope. Authorities have emphasized that “no criminality is suspected” in this heartbreaking incident.

The young girl was riding her bike from her driveway into the street when the accident occurred, leaving the community in deep sorrow and shock. Friends and family have described Penelope as a vivacious and joyful child whose smile could brighten even the darkest days. Her boundless love for her friends made her a beloved figure in her Girl Scout troop.

In response to this tragedy, members of Troop 18965 initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe on behalf of Penelope’s family, highlighting her endearing spirit and the profound impact she had on those around her. On Tuesday, they released a balloon in her memory, hoping it would reach her in heaven. $19,559 raised till now through campaign.
