Paul McCartney lost Hofner bass found after over 50 years

Paul McCartney, former member of The Beatles, has been joyfully reunited with his original Höfner bass guitar, which he purchased in the early 1960s and was stolen in the 1970s. This remarkable event was confirmed by McCartney himself on Wednesday.

The historic Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass, a left-handed model, was purchased by McCartney in Hamburg, Germany, in 1961. It served as his primary instrument during The Beatles’ early performances at venues like Hamburg’s Top Ten Club and Liverpool’s Cavern Club, as well as on their early recordings. However, it transitioned to become his backup bass after he acquired a new Höfner in 1963.

The bass guitar went missing in the ’70s, but in 2023, a group of lifelong Beatles fans initiated the Lost Bass Project with the aim of recovering it. Led by Nick Wass, a former Höfner marketing manager and electric guitar developer, along with Scott and Naomi Jones, journalists, the project sought out leads and shared updates on their quest to locate the instrument.

Their breakthrough came when they discovered that the bass had been stolen from a truck in London’s Notting Hill neighborhood in 1972, rather than from The Beatles’ Apple Corps headquarters as previously believed. Ian Horne, one of McCartney’s former sound engineers, provided crucial information about the theft, revealing that it occurred while McCartney and his band Wings were preparing for a tour and recording the album “Red Rose Speedway.”

The Lost Bass Project managed to track the bass’ movements over the years and ultimately located it in the attic of a terraced house on the south coast of England. The current occupant, upon realizing the significance of the instrument, promptly returned it to McCartney.

The news that the long-lost instrument was found was leaked by the family’s 21-year-old son, Ruaidhri Guest, who posted a pic of himself holding the legendary bass with a cheeky expression on social media.

“To my friends and family I inherited this item which has been returned to Paul McCartney. Share the news,” his statement reads.

McCartney, who continued to use a different Höfner bass throughout The Beatles’ career, expressed his gratitude for the return of his original instrument. He shared his fondness for the ’63 Höfner, which he resumed using in the 1980s at the encouragement of Elvis Costello.

This heartwarming reunion serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of McCartney’s musical journey and the remarkable dedication of Beatles fans in preserving and celebrating his iconic instruments.
