The U.S. musician’s viral smash “Rich Men North of Richmond” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, becoming him the first artist to accomplish so in the chart’s history without having any prior chart history.
The Farmville, Virginia-based singer-songwriter and former factory worker Christopher Anthony Lunsford, whose stage name commemorates his grandfather Oliver Anthony, came in first place in the poll, has been quiet on his social media sites since then.
However, he did conduct an interview with Fox News, which, like his hit song, has gained widespread popularity.
During the interview, which was conducted on Saturday, August 19, at his concert in Moyock, North Carolina, he asserts that “We are the melting pot of the world.” “Our diversity is what makes us powerful, too. And we must discover ways to make the most of that rather than using it as a political ploy to keep people apart.
Conservatives, however, have not taken kindly to such statesmanlike remarks. Social media has erupted over the “exclusive” interview with the right-wing Fox Network. What a letdown. One tweet asks, “Did he already sell out to the wealthy men north of Richmond? “Damn, thought we had a real one,” says another. He changed so quickly. The independently released song, whose lyrics mention “your dollar taxed to no end ’cause of rich men north of Richmond” and “the obese milkin’ welfare,” garnered plaudits from the right and criticism from the left after it first gained popularity online earlier this month.
In a video posted on August 7, Anthony said, “I sit pretty dead center down the aisle on politics and always have.” In his Facebook post on August 17, he said, “I am sad to see the world in the state it’s in, with everyone fighting with each other.”
Billy Bragg, a renowned British musician and songwriter, wrote an opinion piece for The Guardian, a left-leaning newspaper in the United Kingdom, in which he claims that “Anthony really does punch down on the poor.” The Bard of Barking goes on to say: “The lives of ordinary working people are being torn apart by the rich, he laments, but we can fix it if we cut welfare – and taxes too.”
