The basketball community is mourning the loss of Eric Montross, the former North Carolina Tar Heels center and NBA player, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 52. His family announced the news on Monday, revealing that Montross had been undergoing treatment for cancer since March.
A statement released through the University of North Carolina conveyed the family’s gratitude for the overwhelming support they received during Eric’s courageous battle. “His family is grateful for the tremendous support and the truly overwhelming love expressed by so many people as he battled with his signature determination and grace,” the statement said.
Eric Montross, a key figure in the University of North Carolina’s basketball history, played for the Tar Heels from 1990 to 1994 under the guidance of the legendary Hall of Fame coach, Dean Smith. His tenure included the 1993 championship run, where he played a pivotal role as the starting center.
Montross earned accolades during his college career, being selected to the first team of all-ACC players and receiving Associated Press second-team All-American honors on two separate occasions. In the 1994 NBA draft, he was chosen as the ninth overall pick by the Boston Celtics, marking the beginning of his eight-year NBA career.
Throughout his NBA journey, Montross played for several teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors. His impact on and off the court was substantial, and he became known for his dedication and skill.
In the years following his playing career, Montross contributed to the University of North Carolina’s athletic department, working for the Rams Club, the fundraising arm of the university’s athletics. Additionally, he served as a radio analyst for UNC games for an impressive eighteen seasons.
The statement from his family highlighted Eric’s character, stating, “To know Eric was to be his friend, and the family knows that the ripples from the generous, thoughtful way that he lived his life will continue in the lives of the many people he touched with his deep and sincere kindness.”
