Young people in Syracuse took notice when award-winning journalist Natasha S. Alford told them they could succeed in anything. After all, she was walking in their shoes. Alford graduated from Syracuse’s Nottingham High School in 2004 before beginning his distinguished journalism career. She regularly visits the New York Center to encourage young people to pursue their ambitions.
Alford is currently CNN’s political commentator and theGrio’s vice president of digital content. Her work has been published in Vogue, The Guardian and The New York Times. In 2024, HarperCollins will release her novel “American Negra”.
The scholarship made it possible for Alford to enter the field of journalism. Now, she awards scholarships to aspiring high school journalists in Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse as a way of giving back to the towns where she first achieved success. In 2021, Alford told Syracuse.com, “I want the kids from the Syracuse City School District to know that they can do anything they set their mind to.”
Students studying Syracuse communications at ITC, Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central, Serenity Baxter, Destiny Fernandez and Nathaniel Teska-Prince, will receive the first three Alford scholarships. All three are under the direction of Jeff Newell, lecturer in mass communications at ITC, and they are all alumni of the Syracuse Press Lab, a Syracuse Press Club initiative to educate create young people for journalism and media careers.
Speaking to the ITC class via Zoom, Alford commented: “Hearing your stories makes me proud to be from Syracuse.” “I remember having some ambitions in high school and questioning if they were really achieved. Where do you come from, where do I come from? I can attest from my own experience that anything is achievable. Alford clarifies that her scholarship is not just for financial gain.
“It’s about getting them to contact me directly to say, ‘I’m here for you on your journey to success, to follow your dreams,’” Alford tells them. Think of me as a support system for you. Their classmates cheered, clapped and hugged them in response to the announcement.
