Mechanicsville, VA – In a devastating incident on Friday evening, Mechanicsville resident Mike Gifford, 48, passed away unexpectedly following a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 64 at the Route 199/Humelsine Parkway exit in York County. The accident occurred on October 20 at approximately 6:36 p.m., as confirmed by state police who responded to the scene.
Reports indicate that Gifford, driving a 2017 Ford Explorer and the sole occupant of the vehicle, lost control due to excessive speed for the prevailing conditions. The vehicle veered off the eastbound side of Interstate 64 near the 242A exit, ultimately colliding head-on with a tree. Despite emergency response efforts, Gifford was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have stated that alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor in the accident, and Gifford was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. Virginia State Police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
