Biography of Mick Bensley

Mick Bensley was born in Sheringham, on the North Norfolk coast, and spent his adult years near the North Sea, where he appreciated its varied moods and challenging weather patterns.

It started to spark my interest in drawing it. After reading Cyril Jolly’s “Henry Blogg of Cromer” in the late 1960s, he created his first watercolor paintings of marine rescues.

He was inspired and motivated to paint this subject by stories of rescues, incredible feats achieved against insurmountable obstacles, and his selfless courage. the men who steer our lifeboats.

Mick Bensley narrates his artistic life

I was a student at Norwich School of Art, then I worked in London for 15 years as a designer and illustrator. Throughout the seventies, I continued to paint in oil and marine watercolors and in 1980 returned to Norfolk to paint professionally. Since then, I have developed a reputation as a skilled and precise maritime artist, with paintings in private collections around the world.

Four highly successful book and picture exhibitions depicting the rescue of Henry Blogg and the crew of the Cromer lifeboat, the Sheringham lifeboat rescue, the Wells and Blakeney lifeboat rescue, and the rescue Caister lifeboats were held at Picturecraft of Holt, Norfolk in 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2008. This is the result of nearly 12 years of work.

A lot of meticulous research involved gathering enough material to produce a book, and it took about two and a half years to complete some drawings, sketches, and paintings.

Research usually begins through reading RNLI reports or being lucky enough to find someone involved in the incident. While reading a description of a rescue, I found myself doing a thumbnail sketch, and often this often forms the basis for a complete picture.

From the thumbnail sketch, a much more detailed working drawing is made focusing on the currents of the sea and the actions of the crew and their ship.

A working drawing provides enough information, if possible, to enter into a conversation with someone involved in the rescue and an opportunity to better understand the event before subjecting it to a picture. complete picture.

I now live and work overlooking the ocean in Rottingdean on the Sussex Coast. I divide my time between painting (with oil paints, watercolors and pastels) and teaching watercolor painting techniques and methods.
