Marilyn Sweet, retired Hollis Hand Elementary School teacher, dies at 69: obituary

LaGrange, GA – LaGrange, Georgia mourns the passing of Marilyn Sweet, a beloved retired teacher from Hollis Hand Elementary School, who peacefully departed on Friday, November 17, 2023, at the age of 69, surrounded by her devoted family. Her death, announced by the school through a heartfelt post, marks the loss of a cherished educator after a brief illness.

Born on November 9, 1954, Marilyn Sweet was the beloved daughter of Mildred Pilgrim Pruitt and the late Jack Pruitt. Throughout her tenure at Hollis Hand Elementary, Sweet demonstrated an unwavering commitment to academic excellence while also valuing the holistic development of her students.

Her teaching philosophy extended beyond textbooks, emphasizing the importance of personal growth and life skills. Marilyn actively engaged in mentoring students in extracurricular pursuits, nurturing their talents beyond the classroom.

The family will receive friends at Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter-Allen-Myhand on Sunday, November 19, 2023, followed by a funeral service at Clearview Chapel on Monday, November 20, 2023. The committal service will take place at Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange, officiated by Pastor Charlie Metcalf.

In honor of Marilyn Sweet’s legacy, the family requests donations be made to support the exceptional education students at Hollis Hand Elementary in lieu of flowers. Her impact as an educator and community advocate will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
