Maria Loi, a highly regarded chef and owner of Loi Estiatorio in Manhattan, fell in love with Mediterranean cuisine as a little girl while studying with her family in her Greek village of Surname.
Maria is now extremely passionate about revealing the age-old cooking secrets of the Greeks to the world on The Life of Loi. She travels all over Greece bringing you delicious and simple recipes that you can prepare at home.
Maria talked with me about how her passion for cooking, the distinctive flavors of Mediterranean cuisine, and her attitude paved the way for her successful career. Both her interview and new TV show showcase Maria’s lovely attitude and food preferences.
I did not do it. My love of cooking was found by my father. I will tell you a story. In my village, I was six years old. I had to stay at home with my cousin because my mother was in the hospital and the rest of the family were there. So I made meatballs, or keftedes.
Who prepared those meatballs, my father asked when he returned and smelled the delicious smell of the meatballs being cooked. Your relatives?” Then I ordered, “Taste them!” I was curious to know what he thought. After trying them out, he said, “Oh! They’re amazing.
“Are they good?” I wonder. then exclaimed, “Oh! Best Keftedes ever, hands down. Then I declared, “I made them!” and he said, “Well, you’re the cook of the house now.”
