In Boulder, Colorado, White was riding his bike when it was struck by another car. White’s tragic death was reported by USA Cycling in a formal statement. “He was a rising star in the off-road cycling scene and his passion for cycling was evident through his racing and camaraderie with his teammates and local community,” stated the statement.
Magnus White, according to USA Cycling, is preparing to compete in the Junior Men’s Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships, which will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 10. White began competing in cycling at the national level at the age of just 10. For the first time this year, the 17-year-old has a spot on the Mountain Bike World Championships team.
At around 12:30 PM (local time), White was reportedly practicing on his Trek Model Emonda SL 7 bike on Diagonal Highway when he was struck by a Toyota Matrix. White was taken in need of immediate medical attention and pronounced dead there. His parents Michael and Jill, as well as his brother Eero, are still alive.
After his father introduced him to cycling when he was a little boy, White became interested in the sport. White says in his profile on the USA Cycling website, “My dad really got me into cycling when I was growing up since he raced road. Then I discovered my local team [Boulder Junior Cycling], which has some very amazing coaches who got me where I am now.
At the age of eight, he joined the neighborhood team Boulder Junior Cycling and quickly moved up the ranks. White has competed for Boulder Junior Cycling in a number of national events.
After winning the junior cyclocross national championship in December 2021, White was given a call-up to the US national team. White finished 2022 by competing in the Cyclocross World Championships in Arkansas as a member of the US team. White was once more chosen to represent his nation in the Dutch edition of the competition this year. Earlier this season, he changed his attention to road cycling and mountain riding. In a few weeks, White would start his senior year of high school.
