Knoxville, PA – A somber atmosphere envelops the community of Knoxville, Pennsylvania, following a tragic shooting incident that claimed the life of Layanah Irene Griffin, a 19-year-old resident. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of September 29, 2023, at an apartment house on South Water St. in Knoxville.
Brendan Thomas York, 21, identified as Griffin’s boyfriend, was taken into custody and has been charged in connection with the shooting. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the tragic event unfolded during a domestic dispute, resulting in Griffin sustaining a fatal gunshot wound.
The police were notified about the incident when York called the Mansfield state police barracks around 2:45 a.m. on September 29, reporting the domestic incident and Griffin’s gunshot wound. Troopers promptly responded, arresting York at the South Water Street address without any resistance.
Upon investigation, troopers discovered Griffin with an apparent gunshot wound to the head and recovered a Harrington & Richardson 5.56-caliber rifle at the scene. A witness in a downstairs apartment reported hearing a verbal argument followed by a loud bang from the upstairs apartment.
Brendan York was subsequently charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and possessing instruments of crime. He was arraigned in District Court and is currently held in Tioga County Prison awaiting a preliminary hearing.

Layanah Irene Griffin, age 19, of Knoxville, PA, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023 at her home. She was born on December 15, 2003 in Williamsport, PA, the daughter of Jennifer Griffin. Layanah was a student at Mansfield University. In high school, she was a cheerleader and a member of the band and chorus. She enjoyed her animals, drawing, writing stories, and gaming.
Layanah is survived her mother, Jennifer of Campbell, NY; two brothers, Haven Wallace of Pottstown, PA, and Greyson McLaughlin of Campbell, NY; stepfather, DaRon Wallce of Pottstown, PA; grandmother, Gloria Wallace of Philadelphia, PA; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Selena Irene Rodriguez.
Friends and family are invited to call on Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 1-2pm at Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 637 S. Main St. Mansfield, PA.
