Larry Holdren Co-founder and Director of the Colorado Energy + Water Institute dies in Denver

Denver is mourning the loss of Larry Holdren, the esteemed Co-founder and Director of the Colorado Energy + Water Institute, who passed away on Friday, November 24th, 2023, due to a sudden aortic tear. The devastating news was confirmed through a heartfelt Facebook post that expressed the shock and sorrow of those who knew him.

Larry’s educational journey began at Syracuse High School, where he graduated in 1990, followed by his studies in Communication at Bethany LB, culminating in 1994. Leveraging his extensive background in communications, Larry emerged as a prominent figure in the region’s communication landscape, serving as a go-to expert for organizations navigating crises and challenging scenarios.

His expertise extended to crisis communications for entities across diverse industries, including energy, real estate, healthcare, food and beverage, retail, sports, and entertainment. Larry’s diverse clientele included renowned names such as BP, Stetson, Cessna, The Metropolitan Opera, Devon Energy, the National Hockey League, Encana, and the Western Governor’s Association.

Before establishing Holdren Strategic Communications in 2014, Larry significantly contributed to the growth of Pure Brand Communications in Denver, a leading integrated communications agency in the region. His professional journey included pivotal roles at Pure Brand Communications, Barnhart (which acquired his company, Charney Bergner & Holdren Public Relations), GBSM, Centura Health, and Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Larry’s industry standing was underscored by his accreditation and board membership with the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) – Colorado Chapter. Recognized by various professional communication societies, he received numerous awards for his outstanding work.

As a co-founder and director of the Colorado Energy + Water Institute, Larry played a pivotal role in orchestrating an annual, invitation-only event that brought together top thought leaders in western energy and water.
