Newcastle, New South Wales – The University of Newcastle community is in mourning following the devastating news of the passing of Professor Kypros Kypri, a dedicated behavioral scientist. Professor Kypri’s life was tragically cut short in a fatal cycling accident in New Zealand. The accident claimed his life, leaving his friends, family, and the academic community he enriched in deep sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Professor Kypri was a distinguished scholar in the field of behavioral science, focusing on the use of psychoactive substances and evaluating policies and interventions aimed at mitigating the harm resulting from substance abuse. His contributions were invaluable, shaping our understanding of substance abuse through meticulous research conducted with both epidemiological and qualitative research methods.
His academic journey took him to prestigious institutions, including the University of New South Wales, the University of California San Diego, and the University of Otago, where he received education in psychology and public health. Professor Kypri’s expertise and passion led him to serve as a Professor at the University of Nebraska’s School of Medicine and Public Health, a role he embraced since 2004.
In his professional pursuits, Professor Kypri dedicated Mondays and Wednesdays to the Drug and Alcohol Clinical Services Research Group at the Newcastle Community Health Centre. On Thursdays and Fridays, he applied his knowledge and skills at the Australian Centre for Cannabinoid Clinical and Research Excellence, housed in the HMRI Building. Even from the confines of his home, he continued his impactful work on Tuesdays, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to advancing the field.
The loss of Professor Kypros Kypri is not only felt within the academic community but also in the lives he touched, the students he inspired, and the colleagues he collaborated with. His legacy as a dedicated scholar and compassionate mentor will endure, reminding us all of the profound impact he made in the field of behavioral science.
