Charleston, South Carolina – The Charleston community is in mourning following a tragic accident that claimed the life of 37-year-old Kevin Mahorney on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred on the Don N. Holt Bridge, a vital connection between Charleston and North Charleston. According to reports, a Toyota Land Cruiser, driven by Mahorney, collided with a concrete jersey barrier on Interstate 526 west near Clements Ferry Road around 8:30 a.m.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Land Cruiser, travelling westbound, struck the barrier with significant force. Tragically, Mahorney was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was thrown from the vehicle due to the impact. The accident left the westbound lanes of Interstate 526 partially closed during the on-site investigation, causing traffic delays in the area.
Authorities confirmed that Mahorney was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and thankfully, he was not submerged in the water below the bridge. There is no indication of involvement of any other vehicles in the collision.
The Don N. Holt Bridge, a prominent structure built in the 1960s and named after the engineer who designed it, is a parallel chord, three-span continuous, modified Warren-type truss bridge. It spans the Cooper River, serving as a critical transportation link between Charleston and North Charleston. Constructed in 1992 by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, the bridge stands as a testament to engineering excellence.
As the community mourns the loss of Kevin Mahorney, the investigation into the accident continues. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for determining the identity of the driver officially. During this difficult time, thoughts and condolences are extended to Kevin Mahorney’s family and loved ones. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of seatbelt safety and vigilance on the roads.
