Josh Gerstein’s career
Before joining ABC, Gerstein covered terrorism-related matters for CNN’s investigative unit, including the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Gerstein served as a Beijing correspondent. of ABC from 2002 to 2003. He made a number of visits to Afghanistan and Pakistan, covering programs like “Nightline” about letters to the families of Guantanamo detainees and Security measures are in place to protect US officials.
He covered the SARS crisis for “World News Tonight” from rural farms in Guangzhou, where the virus is believed to have originated, as well as from the deserted streets of the Chinese capital. Gerstein spent 15 years (1995–2003) working for ABC News.
He was involved in what is now known as having a hand in the 1996 presidential campaign of former Kansas senator Bob Dole. Gerstein then worked at the White House for ABC for five years as a producer and journalist. He covered the White House during President Bill Clinton’s impeachment and as President George W. Bush had to deal with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Gerstein also covered the trial of Lewis Libby, a Bush-era White House official who was found guilty of obstruction of justice in connection with the CIA leak investigation and ultimately had his prison sentence reduced by the president.
Gerstein is in charge of the White House for POLITICO and focuses on legal issues and national security. Before President Barack Obama’s inauguration, Gerstein began working for the groundbreaking political news organization. Since then, he has written extensively about how Obama’s promise to abolish Guantanamo Bay for hostages in the war on terror has failed.
Additionally, he wrote about how the misplaced expectation that the Obama administration would fundamentally change the regulatory framework for the Bush administration’s counterterrorism operations.
