The sudden and tragic passing of Jon Ferreira has left the Bangor, Maine community and beyond in mourning. Known for his talents as a tour guide, actor, writer, and director, Jon met an untimely end in a motor vehicle accident on the early morning of Sunday, September 24. The accident occurred around 2:30 AM as a single car was traveling on Phillips Road toward Kenduskeag Road, losing control at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle ultimately rolled over into a ditch before colliding with a driveway culvert. Emergency responders from the Sheriff’s Office, Glenburn Fire Department, and Hermon Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene near Merryman Road, but tragically, Jon Ferreira, along with two passengers, did not survive the accident.
Christopher Dea, a close friend of Jon, described him as a passionate fire that ignited countless creative endeavors. Jon was not only a great conversationalist but also an exceptional friend to many.
Jon Ferreira was a proud resident of Maine who believed fervently in the power of a community with a strong foundation in the arts. He was convinced that such a community was not only a better place to live but also contributed significantly to the education and entertainment of its residents. Above all, Jon considered himself a storyteller, utilizing his art to enhance society at large and make his local community a better place to call home.
Matthew Wilding shared his sorrow on the death of Jon Ferreira. He stated that:
I’m genuinely sorry to hear this.My relationship with Jon was complicated, and we had a pretty serious falling out years ago that we never really recovered from, but I can say this: Jon Ferreira was a beloved friend to a number of people I really care about, and was part of a cohort of creative weirdos and history nerds that comprised what I consider the golden age of Boston tour guides.I’m saddened by how many of that group are gone now, and that Jon is among them.This tragedy is a sad reminder to me that I could be better and more understanding, and more forgiving, of what I perceive as slights and shortcomings of others. I regret not being more forthcoming in acknowledging his efforts while he was alive these past few years.I am deeply sorry for the community’s loss.
Through his work as a director, designer, and teaching artist, Ferreira brought live theater into various settings, including museums, classrooms, and traditional theatrical spaces. He achieved this by assembling teams of highly skilled artists to tackle meaningful projects. In doing so, he seamlessly integrated representation, diversity, and social justice into works that both educated and entertained, proving that these two goals need not be mutually exclusive.
Jon Ferreira’s legacy in the theater industry spans more than three decades. During this time, he graced the stage in over 100 performances, directed around 50 of those productions, and played crucial roles in countless others, whether in planning, stage management, construction, or running the crew. His contributions to the arts and his dedication to enriching his community will be remembered and cherished by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
