Joe Namath Career
When Joe Namath made the biggest assurance in professional sports history, he was widely known. But after he and his team received their Super Bowl prize money, “Broadway Joe” quickly held the title of the most famous person on earth.
Namath stood by his prediction that the Jets, 18 points behind, would overtake the Colts in Super Bowl III by directing an attack that confounded Baltimore’s formidable defence. The Jets’ defense, which led to five spins, including three interceptions of quarterback Earl Morrall, the NFL’s MVP that year, was a key factor in the surprise win.
Namath added to the legend of professional football after the Jets’ 16-7 win by dancing on the Orange Bowl while pointing to the sky. One of the key factors in Namath’s career being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985 was his performance on that particular day.
We chose to look at five things about Namath that you might not have known in honor of his 80th birthday. One of them is the amazing truth about Namath’s greatest work, a fact that Namath himself would not know until decades later.
Namath (Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania), George Blanda (Youngwood, Pennsylvania), Johnny Unitas (Pittsburgh), Joe Montana (New Eagle, Pennsylvania), Dan Marino (Pittsburgh) and Jim Kelly (Pittsburgh/East Brady, Pennsylvania) are the six quarterback from Western Pennsylvania who is currently inducted into the Canton, Ohio, quarterbacks hall of fame. Six quarterbacks received general recognition in Pittsburgh in 2015.
Namath contributed to the Crimson Tide’s 10-1 record and famed coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s second of six national championships in his final year at Alabama. Despite a modest number of passes, Namath had a 29-4 record as Alabama’s starting quarterback. Namath’s knee eventually cost him his NFL career, though he had no such problems in college, where he dived in to make 15 touchdowns, of which six times during the 1964 season.
Namath was picked by the New York Jets with the #1 overall pick in the 1965 AFL Draft, bypassing the NFL and St. Louis Cardinals to support the Jets. Namath signed with “Gang Green” after receiving a $427,000 contract, which at the time was the largest rookie salary in professional football. Namath, the AFL passing champion in 1966, was a professional bowler in 1965.
Namath led the AFL that season with 28 interceptions and became the first quarterback in professional football history to pass 4,000 yards in 1967. Hall of Famer Don Maynard and All’s stellar combination -Pro George Sauer, who caught a total of 146 passes for 2,323 yards, was fully utilized by Namath.
