Frankston, Australia, – is grieving the loss of a beloved figure in the world of table tennis, Jim Montgomery, the former Australian table tennis coach. Jim passed away on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, at Frankston Hospital, surrounded by his beloved family. His remarkable journey in the sport spanned six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the table tennis community.
Jim’s dedication and passion for table tennis were unparalleled. He was a prominent player in the Victorian Table Tennis Association (VTTA) from 1960 to 1985, where he competed in various divisions, including A3 and A2, achieving numerous Spring A1 Grade seasons. His skills and commitment were evident as he competed in A Grade across multiple associations, including Western Suburbs, North Western, and Northern Districts. Even after moving to Geelong in 1985, Jim continued to excel in the Geelong A Grade pennant competition, showcasing his exceptional talent.
Beyond his prowess on the table, Jim was a visionary administrator. He founded the Kingsville Table Tennis Club in 1958, where he served as Secretary, and later became the Committee Member and President of the Western Suburbs Table Tennis Association (WSTTA). His contributions extended to the establishment of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Table Tennis Club in 1959, aligning it with the Overseas Malaysian Students Association (OMSA) and overseeing 15 combined teams. Additionally, he played a vital role in the formation of the North Western Table Tennis Association (NWTTA) in the 1960s, serving as a respected Board member.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of passion and dedication to the sport he loved. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan, and their four children: Catherine (& Mark), James (& Karen), Jenni (& Doug), and Claire. His memory lives on in the hearts of his eight cherished grandchildren: Annabelle, Grace, Emily, Aidan, Tom, Oliver, Eleanor, and Ewan.
The table tennis community, as well as Frankston, mourn the loss of Jim Montgomery, a true icon in the sport, whose influence will be remembered for generations to come.
