Jessica Watkins’ career

Watkins joined the Stanford football team in her freshman year and played for them for four years. She was a member of the Division I national championship team in 2008, her sophomore year. Watkins was named to the All-American Collegiate Rugby First Division Team in both 2008 and 2010. She played for the USA Eagles in their third-place performance at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens and is a former member member of the US women’s national team. She was the USA team’s top scorer at the World Cup.

Watkins supported the Mars Phoenix lander and tested the prototype drill on Mars as an undergraduate student at the Ames Research Center. She served as NASA Spaceward Bound Crew 86 chief geologist in 2009 at the Mars Desert Research Station. She joined the NEOWISE project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a fresh graduate to study near-Earth asteroids. Watkins also contributed to the plans of the Curiosity Mars rover. Watkins joined the science operations team for a similar mission in 2011.

She is part of the science team for a similar Desert Research and Technology Research mission as well as the planner for the Mars 2020 rover and a sample return mission to Mars. She was involved in the day-to-day planning of Mars rover operations while a postdoctoral researcher at Caltech and a member of the Mars Science Laboratory Science Group. She uses Mars rover imaging data combined with orbital data to study Mars’ stratigraphy, geology, and geomorphology.

Watkins was selected in June 2017 to be a member of NASA Astronaut Team 22, and in August she began a two-year training course. She was selected to be a member of Team Artemis to return people to the Moon in December 2020. The Crew Moon landing mission is slated to launch in 2025. selected as the last member of SpaceX Crew-4, flew in April 2022, she became the fourth astronaut of Group 22 and the first Black woman to be assigned a long-term mission to the Space Station International Space Station (ISS) in November 2021.

Watkins has never been in space before. For the six-month trip, she was working as a mission specialist. Her mission is to track and photograph geological changes on Earth.
