It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janelle Marie Portwood, a woman whose courage and strength left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her. Janelle departed this world on Monday, November 13, 2023, following a valiant battle against cancer.
The somber news was shared through a heartfelt social media post, where friends expressed their sorrow and offered thoughts and prayers for the Portwood family. The post recounted the beauty of Janelle’s spirit and the impact she had on those around her, leaving an enduring legacy of love and warmth.
Janelle’s journey with cancer began in April 2021 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer, which later metastasized to her brain. A fundraising page established in 2021 aimed to alleviate the financial burden of her medical expenses, emphasizing the collective support of prayer warriors, volunteers, and a network of devoted family and friends. The page successfully raised $30,255 of the $60,000 goal.
Amidst the challenges, Janelle faced brain surgery to remove the largest of three tumors, demonstrating unwavering resilience. Her husband, Mike, shared updates on her health, and on November 11, he requested prayers for Janelle and their boys as she entered hospice care. Tragically, on Monday, November 13, Janelle peacefully passed away, surrounded by the love and care of those who cherished her.
Janelle Bernero Portwood, born on April 9, 1977, was a Dental Hygiene Instructor at Prairie State College.
