He traveled to North America after being picked by the Predators and played his first professional season with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With a 36-17-4 record in his first season, he was voted ECHL Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year, as well as being selected to the All-Rookie and First All-Star teams. The bulk of the next three seasons were spent with Nashville’s best minor league club, the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. Laák opted to return to Europe after failing to stay with the Predators, spending the 2003-04 season with SKA St. Petersburg in the Russian Super League. The next year, he relocated to the Czech Republic to play with HC Pardubice in the Czech Extraliga, where he would remain for the next five seasons. He had a lot of success with Pardubice, going 116-85-5 and guiding them to the league title in 2004-05. Laák played the 2009-10 season with Atlant Mytishchi of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after a successful spell in the Czech Extraliga. As the squad was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, he compiled an 11-6-4 record. He also spent part of the season on loan with HC Koice in the Slovak Extraliga, where he appeared in 17 games.

For the 2010-11 season, Laák signed a one-year deal with Jokerit of the Finnish SM-liiga.
