Huntington Park mourns tragic loss of mother and son in suspected DUI accident

Huntington Park, California, September 13, 2023 – The tight-knit community of Huntington Park gathered on Tuesday to pay their heartfelt respects to a mother and her son who tragically lost their lives in a devastating car crash, allegedly caused by a driver under the influence of alcohol. The accident, which occurred last Friday, claimed the lives of 29-year-old Eduardo Rojas and his mother, Bertha Rojas, leaving three others injured in its wake.

The fatal collision unfolded at approximately 8:45 p.m. near the intersection of Maywood Avenue and Randolph Place, as recounted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Jacqueline Danas, Eduardo’s cousin, expressed the deep sorrow of their loss, saying, “They cared for everybody they met, and they were a really strong, loving family, so it’s really sad to see that.”

According to family members, Eduardo was traveling with his brother Kevin and their parents, Bertha and Cuco, when their vehicle collided with a white SUV while passing through Huntington Park. Witness Alexis Salguero, a neighborhood resident, vividly remembers the harrowing scene, “When I came outside, we saw the white SUV was on fire.”

Tragically, both Eduardo and Bertha Rojas lost their lives at the scene of the accident, while Kevin and Cuco remain in critical condition, hospitalized. The driver of the white SUV also suffered injuries and was hospitalized following the collision.

Juan Fernandez, a close friend of Eduardo’s from their childhood, appealed for prayers, saying, “They both need our prayers, and hopefully, by the grace of God, they’ll both come through. They all need our prayers.”

Those who attended the funeral remembered Eduardo as a dedicated teacher at Alliance Collins Family College-Ready High School, where he had previously graduated. He coached both basketball and cross-country, motivating students to take risks and never stop trying. Fernandez fondly recalled, “He never let anything stop him from trying.”

In the wake of the tragic accident, authorities detained the driver of the white SUV on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Police strongly suspect that alcohol played a role in the incident but have chosen not to disclose the driver’s identity.
