When you block an email address, you won’t get any email sent to you and you can’t send email from your Outlook to the blocked address since then.
Now, the question is, How can you do that? It is a simple task. Every email client gives you the option to block senders from receiving their emails. However, in this tutorial, we will specifically talk about how to block email addresses on Outlook (as you might have guessed from the title of the blog!).

How to block senders on Outlook?
Blocking emails in Outlook is pretty straightforward. You just need to select the required email, go to the menu and select the option to block.
Well, the process is simple but different for different versions of Outlook. So, if you want to know how to block emails in Outlook on various devices, follow the procedures outlined more clearly:
Outlook for Windows
- Launch the Outlook app on your desktop.
- Go to the folder where you can find emails from the sender you want to block.
- Select a message from that sender.
- Then in the top menu ribbon click on the Junk option, present under the Home tab.
- This will open a small menu, here you just need to click on the option to Block Senders. And, this is how you block senders in Outlook.
Note: You can also block Outlook emails by right-clicking on said email, clicking on the Junk option, and then selecting Block Sender.
Outlook for the web
There are two ways to block email in Outlook on the Web and both refer to different versions of it. So, if you cannot find the option provided in one of the methods below, refer to the other method and you will be able to block emails on Outlook.
Method-1:
- Start by opening a browser and signing in to your Outlook account.
- Then go to your Inbox or any other folder where you can find emails from the sender you want to block.
- Then, in that folder, select that email.
- Then, click the drop-down arrow next to the Junk option at the top of the email list.
- This will open a small menu where you have to select the Block option.
- Confirm the action by clicking OK on the pop-up that appears on your screen.
Method-2:
- Launch the browser and sign in to your Outlook account.
- Then go to the folder where you can locate the email from the sender you want to block.
- Then, select that email by clicking the checkbox next to it.
- Then click on the other menu icon (three dots) present in the top menu bar.
- This will open a menu. There, click on the Block option and then select the Block Senders option.
With this done, you now know how to block an email address in Outlook on the Web.
Outlook on Mac
The steps below will show you how to block email addresses on Outlook for Mac:
- Open a browser on your Mac, go to Outlook.live.com, and sign in to your account.
- Once your Outlook account is open, go to the Inbox or folder where you can find the email from the sender you want to block.
- Then find that email and select it by clicking on the little checkbox next to it.
- Then, click the down arrow near the Junk option at the top of the email list.
- A small drop-down menu will open where you have to select the Block option.
- Confirm your action by selecting the appropriate option on the pop-up, if asked after you’ve done the steps, until the Outlook emails you’ve selected will be blocked.
Outlook on phone
If you use the Outlook mobile app, you might want to know how to block email in the Outlook for iPhone or Android app. Unfortunately, the Outlook mobile app does not support this feature at the time of writing this article. This means that you cannot block email addresses in the Outlook mobile app.
However, in the Outlook app, you can mark an email as spam or spam and then use the Outlook Web app or desktop (Outlook for Windows or Mac) to perform email blocking in Outlook. Here’s how to do this:
- Open the Outlook app on your device.
- Go to a certain folder to find the email from the sender you want to block.
- Then, select the email from that sender.
- Then, tap the Move To icon present in the bottom toolbar.
- Finally, a menu will open where you have to select the Trash option.
- After you have moved email to Spam, follow the steps outlined in the previous sections to learn how to block email in Outlook on your respective Outlook version.
Specifically for iPhone:
If you are using iPhone and have added your Outlook account to Mail app, listed below is a workaround procedure by which you can know how to block email in Outlook:
- First, open the Mail app on your device.
- Go to the folder where you can find emails from the sender you want to block.
- Tap the email to open it in the message window.
- Then, tap the sender’s name in the From section of the message.
- This will open the sender’s page, where you’ll see the option to Block this Contact. Touch it.
- Confirm your action again by selecting the Block this contact option on the pop-up and this will block Outlook emails.
Add email addresses to blocked senders list in Outlook
Although the above procedures to block email addresses in Outlook are very simple, there is another method by which you can do it. In this case, you can simply add the email address you want to block to the Blocked Senders list and you will not receive any emails from that address.
Here’s how to block Outlook emails using this method:
Outlook for the web
- Open your browser and sign in to your MS Outlook account.
- In your Outlook dashboard, click the Settings icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- From the side menu that opens, select the option See all Outlook settings.
- In the Settings window, go to the Junk Email tab under Email.
- Then, click the +Add option under Blocked Senders and Domains section.
- Finally, enter the email address you want to block and press Enter to save the changes.
Outlook for Windows
- First of all, launch the Outlook application on your system.
- Then go to the Home tab.
- There, click the Junk drop-down menu from the top menu ribbon and select Junk Email Options.
- This will open the Junk Email Preferences window, where you have to go to the Blocked Senders tab and click the Add button.
- Then enter the email address of the sender or the entire domain that you want to block and click OK.
- Finally, click Apply and then OK, and your changes will be saved.
Outlook for Mac
- Launch the Outlook app on your Mac.
- Now, select an email from the email address that you want to block.
- Then, in your Outlook, click on the Tools option from the top menu bar.
- Then select the Junk Email Options option from the menu.
- Finally, click the + icon at the bottom of the screen and enter the email address or domain name that you want to block on Outlook. Closing the window will save the changes.
How to Unblock Senders on Outlook?
This is part bonus! Not only can you unblock your Outlook email addresses, but by going through this process you will also know how to fix Outlook not receiving emails.
As you know, by blocking the sender’s email address, you will no longer receive emails from them. So, if you have mistakenly blocked a contact and are waiting for their email that you did not receive in your Outlook, you can check with this method if you have blocked that contact. If so, unblock them and your problem will be solved.
Here’s how you can do this:
- Open the Outlook application on your system.
- In the Home tab, click the Junk option from the menu ribbon.
- Next, select Junk E-mail Options from the small menu that opens.
- This will open the Junk Email Preferences window, where you have to go to the Blocked Senders tab.
- Next, you will see a list of blocked senders. Select the email address from the list you want to unblock, then click the Remove button.
- Click OK to save the changes.
