This tutorial is dedicated to all of my fellow Gmail users who have ever clicked a “mailto” link to share web page content via email, only to realize that the browser opened the wrong app. email.

The most annoying thing the computer does for me is opening Outlook, even though I’m a dedicated Gmailer.

Not only Gmail users, I know there will be many other email users as well as Yahoo or Outlook who also face the same situation.

My motivation for writing this guide is to educate all email users on how to make their favorite email clients open mailto links for them, be it Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook or others. .

“Mailto” links are hyperlinks that use mailto instead of http://, so if you click on them, a new email compose window will pop up instead of the web page.

For Internet Explorer

Set ‘Mail’ or ‘Outlook’ as default email client

To set the email program of your choice as the default for Internet Explorer, here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Go to your Windows Control Panel
  2. Click ‘Internet Options’

  1. A new menu will appear where you will see several programs of which 2 options are provided for the email client ‘Mail’ and ‘Outlook’. You can choose any one of them to set as the default email program for the browser.

Note- If you want to set Gmail or Yahoo as your default email program, you need to follow the steps provided further.

Set ‘Gmail’ as default email client

  1. Launch Internet Explorer browser on your PC.
  2. You must install the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer; to click this link- Google Toolbar
  3. Once installed, click on the ‘Toolbar Options’ icon in the upper right of the window.
  4. In the ‘Browsing tools’ section, select the ‘Use Gmail for ‘MailTo’ links’ checkbox.
  5. Finally, click ‘Save’.

Set ‘Yahoo’ as default email client

  1. Launch Internet Explorer browser on your PC.
  2. You must install the Yahoo Toolbar for Internet Explorer; to do that click on this link- Yahoo Toolbar
  3. Then restart Internet Explorer
  4. Go to ‘Control Panel’
  5. Click ‘Internet Options’
  6. Click the ‘Programs’ tab
  7. Then select ‘Yahoo! Mail’ from the drop-down menu and then click ‘Ok’.

For Google Chrome

To change the default email program for Google Chrome, follow the steps listed below:

  1. Launch Google Chrome browser
  2. Click the ‘menu’ icon in the upper right corner then click ‘Settings’

To change the default email program for Mozilla Firefox, follow the steps listed below:

  • If you select ‘Always ask’, it will prompt you every time you use the mail function that the program you want to use.
  • If you choose Use (default), this will automatically launch your operating system’s email program to its compose window.
  • If you select ‘Use Gmail’ or ‘Use Yahoo! Mail’, which will open the compose page for the webmail service you selected.
  • When you select ‘Use More’, you will be allowed to choose an external program for Firefox to launch.
  • Clicking on ‘Application Details’ will allow you to see information about all the email programs that Firefox may use.

  1. After making a selection, you can simply close the options page and all changes will be saved automatically.

For Safari

To change the default email client for the Safari browser, follow these instructions:

  1. Launch Safari web browser
  2. Then you have to install ‘Google Mailto Extension’ for Safari using this link- Google Mailto Extension
  3. Click the ‘Download’ icon on the right side of the screen.
  4. Then double click on the extension you downloaded.
  5. Click ‘Install’
  6. Now, in the ‘Options’ section, you have to select the email client of your choice by clicking on it.
  7. Then reload the browser and you’re good to go.

For Windows 10

To change your default email client on Windows 10 is almost like changing other default Windows 10 apps. So, if you want to make your favorite email client your default, here are some guidelines for you:

  1. Click the Windows icon and then the ‘Settings’ icon.
