Porterfield’s career spanned an incredible 87 years, during which he became a revered figure in the world of broadcasting. Born on August 29th, 1928, in Saginaw, Michigan, he initially worked in broadcasting in his hometown. He later moved to Chicago, where he spent the first 21 years of his career at WBBM before joining WLS-TV in 1985. After 24 years at WLS-TV, Porterfield returned to WBBM in 2009 before retiring in 2015.
His hallmark achievement, the multi-decade article series titled “Someone You Should Know,” showcased his talent for capturing the personal stories of countless Chicagoans. Despite challenges and limited resources, Porterfield anchored the weekend news on Saturdays, becoming a trusted voice in the community.
