Cent Icon- Brief Introduction

Cent is the currency of many national currencies including the United States and represents 1/100 of the currency. For example, 1USD=100¢. The word ‘cent’ is derived from the Latin word ‘centum’ which means ‘hundred’. Cent is also commonly referred to as ‘penny’ or ‘centavo’ with the same monetary value. The penny sign is usually written with a stroke over the letter ‘c’.

If we talk about the use of the coin symbol, it is most often used in price lists and advertisements to represent amounts less than 1 dollar.

  • For example, you could write 63 cents as 63¢ or $0.63.

It is always better to write the value in cents than to write the amount with zero dollars at the beginning. However, it is not as easy to enter the coin symbol as in the case of the dollar sign; you don’t label it on the keyboard.

However, as part of Unicode, it is the international standard for displaying text on computers, smartphones and other devices; so that means most modern devices have coin notation and also some way you can enter it digitally.
