However, Gregory Bender, armed with a gun, fatally shot Patrick four times at his home. The murder sent shockwaves through the community, and investigators discovered that Patrick’s computer and the hard drive from his home’s security system were missing, suggesting that Bender took them after committing the crime.
Authorities began focusing their attention on Bender as a potential suspect with the help of Jessica Devnani, who expressed suspicions about his involvement in the murders. Devnani revealed to the police that Bender had been harassing her ever since she started dating Patrick. She recounted how he regularly left threatening messages for her and Patrick. During a search of Bender’s residence, police discovered notes similar to those described by Sanchez, as well as bullet casings that matched those found at the crime scene. These findings led to Bender’s arrest, and he was later charged with first-degree murder. The trial began on May 25, 2021, and after more than three days, the jury reached a guilty verdict against Gregory Bender for the murder of 25-year-old Patrick De La Cerda. As a result, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
