Geneva HS freshman swimmer James Oliver died from stroke

The Geneva Community High School is reeling from the devastating loss of freshman swimmer James Oliver, who tragically succumbed to a stroke at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago on Sunday, December 17, 2023. The 14-year-old passed away after battling the aftermath of a stroke he suffered on December 8th, following swim practice.

Principal Tom Rogers confirmed the heartbreaking news on Monday morning, expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to the Oliver family. James remained in critical condition until his passing, leaving the Geneva community in mourning.

The school rallied behind James’s family, particularly his brother Sean, a junior at Geneva High School, as they cope with this profound loss. The school’s Student Services team offers support to students in need during and after school hours, emphasizing the availability of counseling and aid for those struggling.

Brianna Lamp Wessel posted on Facebook,

“The third grade teacher at Clare’s School has gone through unimaginable heartbreak in the last week and a half. Sadly the school community learned that her son, James, went straight to the arms of Jesus last night after a hard fought battle. The pain and sadness the Oliver family must be feeling can’t even be put into words I’m sure. My heart is broken for them all. Please just pray for the Oliver family as they navigate having to say good bye to their precious son.”

In response to this tragedy, Jennifer Olsen of Saint Charles, Illinois, initiated a GoFundMe campaign titled “James Oliver and Family” to assist the family with funeral expenses. The community’s overwhelming generosity has resulted in raising $26,050 USD, with a goal of $50,000 to support various financial needs, including uncovered expenses, future care, travel, and more.
