A Brooklyn community is grappling with shock and sorrow following the brutal shooting of a father and his stepson, allegedly by their downstairs neighbor, Jason Pass. The devastating incident unfolded at the Flatbush Gardens complex located at 1418 Brooklyn Avenue, leaving the neighborhood in a state of disbelief and grief.

Bladimy Mathurin and his stepson, Chinwai Mode, were tragically killed, the culmination of an ongoing noise dispute with Pass, who resided on the lower floor. The dispute, primarily centered around sounds from the upstairs apartment, had been escalating over time. A video recording from the apartment complex’s fourth floor captured the harrowing incident that transpired on Sunday night.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Pass had filed multiple noise complaints against the victims since March 2022, citing disturbances caused by the lack of carpeting in the upstairs apartment. Despite attempts at mediation by the building management, the situation remained unresolved, leading to the fatal confrontation.

Marie Delille, the wife and mother of the victims, spoke out, revealing that her husband had responded to Pass’s disruptive behavior by retaliating in kind. She expressed disbelief and anguish over the use of a gun, an action that shattered her family forever.

Brooklyn Councilwoman Farah Louis extended her support to the grieving family, emphasizing Mathurin’s dedication as the breadwinner, juggling two jobs as an Uber driver and a school bus driver to provide for his loved ones. The councilwoman, joined by the community, urged Pass to surrender to the authorities, denouncing the violence that has ravaged a once-harmonious neighborhood.

In response to the tragedy, the anti-violence group Elite Learners, Inc., rallied with other community members outside the apartment complex, underscoring the vital role of community support and resources during these distressing times. The community plans to gather in a prayer circle around the complex on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., standing in solidarity against violence and advocating for peace within the community.
