Rabbi Eric B. Wisnia, a cherished spiritual leader, mentor, and community advocate, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Cantor David and Hope Wisnia and spent his formative years in Levittown, Pennsylvania, alongside his siblings Michael, Karen, and Jana.

Rabbi Wisnia, a devoted husband of 52 years to Judith Glassburg Wisnia and a loving father to Sara, Dov, and Avi, made a significant impact on the communities he touched. He resided with his family in East Windsor, NJ, and Yardley and Dresher, PA, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion. His memory is cherished by numerous family members, friends, colleagues, and congregants.
His educational journey led him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Thought in May 1970. He continued his studies at the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio, earning a Master of Hebrew Letters and ordination in May 1974. Recognized for his dedication, he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree in March 1999.
Rabbi Wisnia’s calling to serve began at Congregation Shomer Emunim in Toledo, Ohio, as an assistant Rabbi from 1974 to 1977. Later, he joined Congregation Beth Chaim in West Windsor, New Jersey, where he held the position of Senior Rabbi from June 1977 until his retirement in February 2019, earning the title of Rabbi Emeritus.
Throughout his tenure, Rabbi Wisnia demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication, contributing to the growth of Congregation Beth Chaim from 160 to 600 families. Under his guidance, the synagogue witnessed significant expansions, both physically and in its programming. He was renowned for his enthusiasm, intelligence, guidance, and sense of humor, leaving an indelible mark on the congregation.
Beyond the synagogue, Rabbi Wisnia’s influence extended to various community and religious organizations. He held esteemed positions, including President of the Mercer County Board of Rabbis, President of the New Jersey Association of Reform Rabbis, and President of the Shore Area Board of Rabbis. His commitment to ethics, education, and interfaith connections was unparalleled.
Rabbi Wisnia’s compassionate spirit extended even beyond his passing as a tissue donor, providing the gift of life to others. Funeral services in honor of Rabbi Wisnia will be held on Sunday, October 1, at 3 p.m. at Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia, followed by a memorial reception and shiva service at the synagogue. The burial ceremony will remain private.
During the week, Shiva will be observed at 7 p.m., Monday – Thursday, at the Wisnia residence in Dresher, PA. In memory of Rabbi Wisnia, contributions can be made to the National Brain Tumor Society, with donations designated to Team Dov. Rabbi Wisnia’s enduring impact on countless lives will be remembered and cherished for generations to come.
