Washington – The global community is mourning the loss of Eric Biel, the Senior Advisor of the Fair Labor Association, who passed away on Monday, November 7, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. The sad news was confirmed on Wednesday through a poignant post, expressing profound sorrow at the departure of a cherished friend and colleague.
“We are heartbroken to share news of the death of our friend and colleague Eric Biel. He was an integral part of our lives and the Fair Labor Association’s work, and his contribution to improving the lives of millions of workers worldwide will never be forgotten,” the post read.
The specific cause of Eric Biel’s passing has not been disclosed, leaving many to reflect on the substantial impact he made during his lifetime.
Eric Biel, an alumnus of Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. degree, furthered his education by earning a joint J.D.-M.P.A. degree from Yale Law School and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton. His dedication to the cause of labor rights and global working conditions led him to assume the role of Senior Advisor to the Fair Labor Association in January 2018.
The Fair Labor Association operates as a multi-stakeholder entity, uniting businesses, civil society organizations, and educational institutions to advocate for and safeguard workers’ rights internationally.
Prior to his role at the Fair Labor Association, Biel held the position of Associate Deputy Undersecretary at the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) from January 2012 to January 2017. During this time, he spearheaded initiatives addressing a diverse array of legal and policy issues.
Eric Biel’s career extended beyond government service, as he engaged in various projects with businesses, legal entities, and non-profit organizations. He emerged as a prominent speaker on topics encompassing trade, labor, business, and human rights. His notable contributions included participation in the Council on Foreign Relations Task Force on the Future of the U.S. Workforce, concluding its activities in April 2018.
Between 2000 and 2011, Biel held several roles outside of government, including Deputy Washington Director and Senior Counsel at Human Rights First. His extensive government service from 1990 to 2000 featured senior positions at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Executive Directorship of the bipartisan Commission on Protecting and Reducing Government Secrecy, and the role of Trade Counsel at the Senate Finance Committee.
Since 2008, Eric Biel has been an instructor at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he taught a course titled “Human Rights at the Intersection of Trade and Corporate Responsibility.” His legacy as a tireless advocate for workers’ rights and an influential voice in the realm of trade and human rights will endure, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working with him and benefitting from his expertise.
