The recent news that Elizabeth Lovat, a lifeguard in Huntington Beach, suffered a spinal injury has sparked outrage among the public. Elizabeth, a former standout athlete at Huntington Beach High School and a city lifeguard, was injured while on duty on Monday, July 3. She was quickly taken to the hospital and is currently in a serious but stable condition.
The City of Huntington Beach has expressed a focus on supporting Elizabeth and her family during her recovery. Out of respect for their privacy, no further details have been disclosed.
In response to the incident, the Huntington Beach Fire Outreach Association has set up a fundraiser to support Elizabeth. They emphasize her passion for helping others and her use of American Sign Language to communicate and contribute to her community. The exact cause of Elizabeth’s spinal cord injury is still unknown. The California Surf Lifeguards Association, which raises awareness for beach safety, states that most spinal injuries occur when someone dives head first and hits bottom. Such injuries can have serious lifelong consequences for the victim, as well as their loved ones and rescuers. Symptoms of a spinal injury can include numbness, bruising, neck pain, shortness of breath, weakness in the limbs, and a feeling of numbness or tingling.
Before the incident, Elizabeth Lovat had excelled as a water polo player at Huntington Beach High School, being recognized as an All-Wave League first team in her senior year. She continued her athletic journey at Iona University, joining the women’s water polo team. Despite facing a shoulder injury that sidelined her for her sophomore year, she came back strong as a senior, playing multiple games and earning the title of All-rounder of the Year. All-Metro Atlantic Conference for his academic achievements.
Elizabeth will begin her senior year in late August, pursuing a degree in speech-language pathology. She comes from a family with a strong background in water sports, as her brother John Lovat excels at water polo and her sister Allison has had a long lifeguarding career.
