The global radio community mourns the loss of Dusty Street DJ, an iconic radio personality whose illustrious career spanned over five decades. Dusty’s unparalleled contribution to the world of music and radio left an indelible mark, solidifying her legacy as a pioneering female disc jockey.
Dusty Street’s unfortunate passing on October 21, 2023, following a prolonged battle with cancer, marked the end of an era in the radio industry. Her captivating voice and profound influence earned her a special place in the hearts of listeners, particularly in Los Angeles, where she became a beloved figure on the airwaves.
Freddie Woods took social media and paid tribute to Dusty Street on Facebook,
SAD SAD SAD NEWS! Dusty Street, whom I had the pleasure and honor of knowing plus working with during my years at 92.3 KOMP (and not one damn picture) has passed away! There’s an old saying “To know her is to love her.” She was a pure flowerchild in every word! Known for her sultry vamp voice, she began in San Francisco in 1967 working for pioneering underground rock station KMPX then moved to KSAN in 1969, Dusty was there when tens of thousands arrived to “turn on, tune in and drop out” 50 years ago. After eleven years at KSAN, Street transitioned to work for KROQ in LA and quickly became one of the most popular disc jockeys on the airwaves. Dusty worked in radio for over 35 years. She was a quintessential “Rock Jock” on the air in Los Angeles and around the country. But as the industry changed and stations changed formats, she was struggling to find work and keep her medical benefits. She had to undergo several spinal surgeries and had been doing Sirius XM Deep Tracks Channel 27. Her long-standing career and influence in the radio industry undoubtedly make her a icon. Her contributions to the field, particularly as one of the first female rock DJs in the United States, have paved the way for many others in the industry. I for one will miss my soft spoken bright eyed friend who always had a smile, a kind word and the knowledge of the ages! Rest easy Dusty, the airwaves will never be the same. She was… AN ORIGINAL! Positive Vibes to us all!
Recognized as one of the earliest female rock DJs in the United States, Dusty Street’s impact transcended her role as a radio DJ and engineer. She fearlessly championed critical issues within the industry, notably advocating against the implementation of a rock music lyrics rating system by the Parents Music Resource Center, a cause that resonated with countless music enthusiasts.
RIP #DustyStreet – a force on radio and in life. How lucky we were to share those years with you on the airwaves🙏🦅
