I met this man in February while shooting a documentary about the “Team Broken Earth” volunteer healthcare team from Newfoundland and their mission in Antigua, Guatemala to provide healthcare including surgeries to people with little to no local access. Dr. Gill and his team were in the O.R. pretty much non stop for 8 days. I’ve never seen anything more close to being described as “Gods Work”.
I’ve had my struggles finding hope in my heart for humanity as of late, but beacons like this man remind me that there is true goodness out there. Dr. Atam was very much loved and highly respected among his peers. The way the nurses and other doctors spoke of him, was like he was a living legend. 20 years of charity healthcare all around the world, he has helped thousands of people regain their life back from debilitating and horrendous afflictions. His humble and warm nature was surprising, it belied instant friendship, and you could feel how much he cared about his patients and staff. A true hero to inspire a generation – Rest in Peace Dr. Atam.
