Travis Ely, a dedicated student and cherished member of the college fishing community, tragically lost his life in a deadly car accident on Sunday night, October 15, 2023, after participating in the ACA fishing event – Collegiate Bass Championship.
According to reports, the accident occurred while Travis was en route to base after the fishing event. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his fellow students, teammates, and the entire angling community in shock and mourning.
The Bass Pro Shops Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, deeply saddened by the loss, expressed their condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Travis Ely and Hunter Heckman. Please keep those affected in your prayers in this difficult time.”
In the wake of this tragedy, community members have called for a re-evaluation of tournament schedules. Concerns were raised about the safety of participants traveling back after Saturday-Sunday events, urging organizers to reconsider the timing to prevent future accidents.
Bill Berry shared a post on fb on the death of Travis Ely:
This hurts so bad. When Cole decided on Purdue, Travis Ely reached out to him to partner up with him during their college bass fishing career. They immediately liked each other and had a connection while in the boat. In their short time together, Travis became a Big Brother to Cole, checking in with him about school and when they would hit the water again. Travis’ smile was contagious and his friendship was true. I, too, am so proud to also call him my friend. My heart goes out to his family, friends, & Purdue Bass Fishing Club.
Travis Ely, a student at Purdue University and a resident of Nashville, Indiana, was an active member of the Purdue University Fishing Team. He showcased his skills in the Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, earning a respectable 35th-place finish out of 248 boats in the @collegiatebass Aftco Open on Lake Dardanelle. His dedication to his sport and his team left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
As the Purdue Bass Fishing Club, Travis’s friends, and family grapple with this heartbreaking loss, a request for prayers has been extended to the community. Together, they mourn the tragic demise of a promising young individual, remembering Travis Ely for his passion, camaraderie, and the joy he brought to the world of college fishing.
