The announcement of his demise was shared on his business’s Facebook page, commemorating the life of a legendary figure and pioneer of Laughlin, Donald J. Laughlin, whose impactful contributions shaped the region’s hospitality industry.

“It is with heavy heart we announce the passing of a legend and Laughlin Pioneer, Donald J. Laughlin, on 10/22/2023,” Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino shared his death news. “He was 92 years young. Don touched many lives in our local community as well as nationwide, and we understand how difficult this news will be for many. Especially our Riverside Resort family. Don Laughlin was truly an amazing man to work with and learn from. Matt and the Laughlin family have asked for some time to grieve and an official statement including memorial service will be made. Born on May 4, 1931, in Owatonna, Minnesota, Don Laughlin initially delved into trapping fur during his early years, gradually transitioning to the installation of slot machines in hunting lodges. Despite earning a steady $500 per week, his commitment to this venture led to a pivotal decision when his school principal presented him with an ultimatum – abandon the slot machine business or leave school. Opting to forge a new path, Laughlin embarked on a transformative journey that would define his entrepreneurial spirit.

In 1952, Laughlin moved to Las Vegas, where he worked as a waiter during the day and attended dealer school at night. He later bought the 101 Club in North Las Vegas in 1954, marking his entry into the gaming industry.

After selling the 101 Club in 1964, Laughlin discovered an eight-room bar and motel along the Colorado River, south of Las Vegas. In 1966, he opened the Riverside Resort, featuring all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents and a modest gaming area.

Through his vision and determination, Laughlin transformed this area into the town of Laughlin, with the U.S. Postal Service giving it the “Laughlin” name in 1968. Today, Laughlin is home to eight casino-resorts and attracts nearly 2 million visitors annually, serving as a popular alternative to Las Vegas.

Don Laughlin’s legacy extended beyond his entrepreneurial success. He was known for creating a welcoming and nostalgic Vegas atmosphere at his resort. He often interacted with guests and even took lucky players on helicopter rides, showcasing his love for aviation.

Not only did Laughlin contribute to the development of the town, but he also funded and built the Laughlin Bridge in 1986, connecting Nevada and Arizona, and donated land and funding for the Laughlin/Bullhead City International Airport in 1991.

His resort offered a wide range of entertainment, from gaming to live performances, and family-friendly amenities like a bowling center and a cinema. He also invested in the community by funding flood control and airport development.

Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino has grown significantly since its inception, employing nearly 2,000 people and having an annual payroll of over $40 million. Laughlin’s legacy is not only reflected in the success of his resort but also in the vibrant community he helped create.
