San Mateo County, CA – San Mateo County is mourning the loss of former Sheriff and County Supervisor, Don Horsley, who passed away on November 24, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. The announcement of his passing reverberated through the community via a heartfelt Facebook post that shared the sad news of his demise.
Don Horsley’s career in public service began in 1972 with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, where he started as a patrol deputy dedicated to serving the City of East Palo Alto. Over the years, he ascended the ranks and, in 1993, achieved the remarkable milestone of being elected Sheriff of San Mateo County. Throughout his tenure, Horsley’s dedication to making a positive impact on underserved communities, especially children, was evident. His brainchild, the Sheriff’s Activity League, became a cornerstone in supporting thousands of children across the county.

“I am incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of former County Supervisor Don Horsley. When he first ran for office, I supported his opponent. After he won, he reached out to me to talk. He told me he admired what I did for Pacifica schools and wanted to support where he could. And he always did. That is leadership.“We did not always see eye to eye, but he always made time to listen to me genuinely. I wish we had more legislators like that.My heart goes out to his family. May he rest in peace.”
Following his retirement in 2007 after 14 years as sheriff, Horsley continued his commitment to public service as the Board President for the Sequoia Healthcare District. His dedication to the well-being of the community persisted when he secured a position on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 2010, further solidifying his enduring influence.
