A person fatally struck by train in Caltrain accident in Redwood City

Today, a devastating incident unfolded at Brewster Avenue, just north of the Redwood City station, as a pedestrian was struck and killed by a southbound commuter passenger train at approximately 2:55 p.m. The train involved in the accident, Train 644, carrying 149 passengers, tragically claimed a life, yet thankfully, no injuries were reported among the passengers.

In response to the accident, immediate measures were taken as trains were redirected to bypass the affected area using the northbound tracks from around 3:30 p.m. To ensure safety, restricted speeds of 15 mph were implemented during this redirection.

Aiding the affected passengers, Train 248 arrived at 3:46 p.m. to transport the remaining passengers from Train 644 to their intended destinations. Meanwhile, transit police authorities, responsible for patrolling the Caltrain corridor, have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and identify the victim as part of the ongoing investigation. This tragic event marks the 13th fatality on Caltrain railways this year, underscoring the critical need for continued vigilance and safety awareness among pedestrians and train operators.

Amid this sorrowful time, Caltrain extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased individual. The railway authority pledges full cooperation with the investigation and is committed to implementing necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Emphasizing the paramount importance of adhering to safety regulations near railway tracks, Caltrain urges pedestrians to exercise caution and vigilance consistently. Collaborating closely with transit police, they remain dedicated to offering support throughout the investigative process.
