It was discovered that Perre, who was known to have health problems and died in hospital last night, had delivered a package bomb to the NCA facility in Adelaide’s central business district.

Detective Sergeant Geoffrey Bowen was killed in the March 2, 1994 daylight bombing, while attorney Peter Wallis was wounded. Wallis lost an eye and suffered 35% burns on his body.

As a form of retaliation for the police investigation of the Perre family’s drug activity, Perre delivered the device to Sergeant Bowen’s Waymouth Street workplace.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in South Australia announced Perre’s death. “DCS confirms inmate declared dead at 11:52 p.m [on] May 8, 2023 at the RAH,” it added in a statement.

Perre was immediately recognized as a suspect after the explosion, however, the charges were initially dismissed in September 1994 before Perre was re-indicted in 2018.

Perre was found guilty of murder and attempted murder by Justice Kevin Nicholson last June after a seven-month trial in which the prosecution stated that he harbored a “deep hatred” for with the police, especially Sergeant Bowen.

“Geoffrey Bowen was the intended victim, and he passed away. During the trial, Sandi McDonald, the prosecutor at the time, informed the Supreme Court that this was a personal matter. He was in custody at the time of his conviction on other charges.

The Supreme Court was told that Perre had fallen ill during the trial. The then 65-year-old man fainted shortly after his conviction and was taken to hospital for treatment in what the Department of Correctional Services described as “a bout of illness.” It was later discovered that he had undergone heart surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital to clear an artery blockage.

He was sentenced to life in prison in October, with a 30-year non-parole period that won’t begin until Perre completes his six-year 10-month sentence for drug trafficking. In asking for the conviction to be reversed, Perre argued that there was not enough evidence to directly link him to the explosives.

However, at the beginning of a two-day appeal hearing in February this year, it was reported that Perre was absent due to “in ill health”. Undoubtedly one of Adelaide’s most notorious crimes was the 1994 NCA bombing.
