Fairfield, CT — A grim scene unfolded outside Jorge Bergoglio Hall early Friday morning, leaving Sacred Heart University (SHU) students in shock and Fairfield residents concerned. Fairfield police returned to the site on Jefferson Street on Monday to reconstruct the harrowing two-car collision that severely injured five SHU students and an Uber driver.
Since the incident, Fairfield Police Lieutenant Michael Paris has asserted their unwavering commitment to resolution. Two students, still in intensive care, face a challenging recovery. One remains in a medically induced coma, as detailed in a family-led online fundraising campaign.
Police said over the weekend the Uber driver’s condition had worsened. Later Monday, police released updates on the conditions of the victims. “The driver from the Audi (male student) is in critical condition,” Nook said.
Tyler Delk is still alive but in intensive care. SHU student Tyler Delk was listed Monday afternoon as a patient in the St. Vincent’s Medical Center’s ICU, according to a spokesperson for the health facility. A GoFundMe for Delk said he remained in a “medically induced coma” suffering from “multiple significant injuries.” “He is currently in critical condition in the ICU in a medically induced coma,” the GoFundMe said. “He has multiple significant injuries, including a brain injury, dissected carotid artery, broken jaw, broken ribs, collapsed lung, and lacerated spleen among other things.”
The second person admitted to St. Vincent’s, an unidentified female SHU student, was in critical but stable condition Monday, according to Nook. Of the four people admitted to Bridgeport Hospital, Nook said, two female students had been discharged as of Monday, one female student remained in critical but stable condition Monday, and the Uber driver remained in critical but stable condition Monday.
Student Olivia Graham was listed as a patient in Bridgeport Hospital’s ICU, a spokesperson at that facility confirmed. A GoFundMe for Graham said she is recovering from “somewhat serious” injuries. “She is in okay condition and is on a long road to recovery,” the GoFundMe said
Disturbing footage of the crash, circulating on social media, shows an Audi veering across the road’s center line and colliding with an Uber driver’s Toyota Corolla near Martire Business and Communications Center. Both vehicles were violently thrust backward, leaving a trail of devastation. The crash site, near Jefferson Street and the Martire center’s parking lot, bore witness to the tragic event.
SHU’s response included cooperating with law enforcement, providing them with the crucial video for their investigation. Fairfield police, however, have not addressed the circumstances surrounding the video’s release.
During a Friday news conference, Lt. Paris revealed that the Audi driver, a male SHU student, lost control after hitting a curb. The collision involved an Uber driver transporting four female SHU students back to campus.
The victims were admitted to local hospitals, with some in critical condition. Updates on their status were provided by Fairfield police, shedding light on the severity of their injuries.
