The Richmond RCMP-supported Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is seeking public assistance in the tragic murders of Derrek Chen, 46, and his teenage son, who were found dead in their Richmond home on November 30. Authorities have identified a suspect and are urging the community for crucial information to aid in the ongoing investigation.
Sergeant Timothy Pierotti, briefing the media at the Rocky View nature playground near the Chen family’s home, highlighted the progress in the case. The identification of a suspect and the ongoing exploration into the motive signify significant developments in the investigation.
Pierotti described the suspect as captured on grainy CCTV footage leaving the crime scene at 8:40 p.m. on November 30. The individual wore distinctive clothing—a white hat, dark coat, full-face balaclava-style covering, and light blue jeans. The suspect’s escape route led towards London Fields, close to the playground.
Authorities are urging potential witnesses, especially those at the park between 8:30 and 9 p.m. on November 30, to come forward. Pierotti emphasized the importance of information, even if seemingly insignificant, and encouraged community support.
Acknowledging the absence of gang involvement and that neither Chen nor his son were known to the police, Pierotti confirmed the initial reports of multiple injuries and stated that investigators believe the killings were intentional.
To aid in the investigation, individuals with information are urged to contact IHIT through their information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448). The inquiry is ongoing, and authorities appreciate any support from the community to bring justice to Derrek Chen and his son.
