David Crosby’s Biography
David Van Cortlandt Crosby (August 14, 1941) is an American singer, guitarist, and composer. He founded Byrds, Crosby, Stills & Nash and his solo career.
The second son of Oscar-winning Wall Street videographer Floyd Crosby and Macy’s salesman Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead, Crosby was born in Los Angeles, California.
His mother – the granddaughter of Pittsburgh Bishop Cortlandt Whitehead – is a Van Cortlandt, and his father is a Van Rensselaer.
Crosby is the younger brother of Ethan Crosby. He attended University Elementary School in Los Angeles, Crane Country Day School in Montecito and Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara for elementary and middle school in California.
He played with Terry Callier in Chicago and Greenwich Village, but they didn’t record.
He played with Les Baxter’s Balladeers around 1962. Crosby’s 1963 solo debut was produced by Jim Dickson.
He created the Jet Set with Jim McGuinn and Gene Clark in early 1964, then the Byrds with bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke.
After the Monterey Pop Festival, Crosby left the Byrds due to artistic disagreements.
Crosby recorded several solo and collab albums with Stephen Stills after producing Joni Mitchell’s 1968 debut LP. Graham Nash joined later.
Crosby’s 1969 debut album, Stills & Nash catapulted them to stardom.
In 1969, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) performed at Woodstock for the second time after adding Neil Young, Stills’ old Buffalo Springfield bandmate.
1969 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
If I Could Only Remember My Name, Crosby’s 1971 solo debut, featured musicians Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and Santana.
Crosby founded CPR, aka Crosby, Pevar & Raymond, with guitarist Jeff Pevar and his son, pianist James Raymond, in 1996. They have produced two studio albums and two live albums before. when it disbanded in 2004.
Crosby, Stills & Nash (1991) and Byrds (1991) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1997).

On January 19, 2023, David Crosby died at the age of 81.
His wife, Jan Dance, shared the following statement to Variety: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away after a lengthy illness. ” He felt the warmth and companionship of his wife, soulmate Jan, as well as their son Django. Even when he is no longer here with us, his generous spirit and humanity will continue to guide and motivate us.
She went on to say that his legacy will be continued through the amazing music he has created. All those who know David and all those whose lives have been affected can find peace, love and harmony. He will miss all of us. As we mourn and try to accept our great loss, we humbly and politely ask for privacy at this difficult time. I am grateful for the love and prayers that have been sent.
