ALBANY, N.Y. — The Albany community is grappling with the sudden and tragic loss of Col. David M. Cornell, a highly regarded figure in the New York State Forest Ranger community. At 52 years old, Col. Cornell’s untimely passing has left his family, friends, and the greater community in deep sorrow.
Col. Cornell’s impact was felt far beyond his professional role as Assistant Director of the New York State Forest Ranger’s Professional Standards and Law Enforcement Chief. His warm and affable personality, coupled with an extraordinary ability to lend a listening ear and offer unwavering support, endeared him to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on January 19, 1971, in Syracuse, NY, Col. Cornell’s legacy is one of dedicated service and a profound commitment to his family and state. After honorably serving in the United States Marines, he continued his journey by attending SUNY ESF Ranger School. His 21 years as a Forest Ranger in Camden, NY, underscored his dedication to protecting and preserving the natural world.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Col. Cornell’s passions included fishing, hunting, and embracing the wonders of nature. He found joy in fishing and crabbing during Maryland summer vacations, and he had a knack for fixing motorcycles and cars, a testament to his love for challenges.
Col. Cornell’s loving wife, Karalea Cornell, along with his two sons, Owen and Gardner Cornell, survive him. He is also survived by his parents, Louise (Wally) Schaefer and David (Rosanne) Cornell, as well as his sister, Sheri (Alex) Santorelli. His family-in-law, including mother and father-in-law Linda and David Flynn, and brother-in-law Eric Flynn, mourn alongside dear friend Kurt Schott.
A funeral service honoring Col. David M. Cornell will take place on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 12 pm at the Greenwich Elks Club. This solemn event will be followed by full military honors, a fitting tribute to his service. Prior to the service, family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 10-12 at the Greenwich Elks Club.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to make donations to the American Suicide Prevention or the Arbor Foundation.
