Punta Gorda, Belize – A tragic incident unfolded in Punta Gorda Town on September 16, 2023, resulting in the loss of a beloved woman, Dana Gonzalez. The 35-year-old victim, a resident of the Hollywood Area in Punta Gorda Town, was fatally shot during a senseless act of violence that took place at approximately 2:10 am on Far West Street.
Dana Gonzalez was accompanied by her partner, 22-year-old Gustavo Mendez, when they were both targeted by a lone gunman. The assailant fired several gunshots, tragically hitting Dana Gonzalez and causing fatal injuries. Gustavo Mendez, who was also wounded, received two gunshot wounds to the upper shoulder and was immediately rushed to Punta Gorda Hospital for treatment.
The heartbreaking incident occurred shortly after the couple had left a wake on Prince Street and were heading home. The community was left in shock and grief by this act of violence that claimed the life of Dana Gonzalez, a woman known and loved in her community.
The police swiftly responded to the scene, discovering Dana Gonzalez’s lifeless body in a crouched position behind a building, bearing a gunshot wound to the center of her back. Gustavo Mendez, the survivor of the attack, is receiving medical attention at the Punta Gorda Hospital.
In the wake of this tragedy, the residents of Punta Gorda expressed their outrage and sorrow over the loss of Dana Gonzalez. The community united to protest this heinous act, with tires set ablaze in the Hollywood area as a symbol of their anger and demand for justice.
Authorities are actively investigating the incident and have identified a suspect, Fibriel Savala, in connection with this heinous crime. The community stands together, seeking justice for Dana Gonzalez and condemning such acts of violence within their town.
