Cole McPherson dies in drowning accident on Sproat Lake in canoe sinks

In a devastating incident on Saturday afternoon at British Columbia’s Sproat Lake Provincial Park, tragedy struck when three young individuals, believed to be adolescents, faced a fatal accident while boating. The heart-wrenching event unfolded as they launched their canoe from the park’s boat launch, leading to the drowning of all three.

The ill-fated journey across the lake took a tragic turn when the canoe capsized approximately 1.5 kilometers into their voyage. The screams of distress were heard by individuals on land, prompting a swift response in a small boat. Although two of the three were rescued, the search for the third young man proved futile, and he remained missing.

A search effort, conducted on Sunday morning at the easternmost part of the lake with the assistance of an RCMP aircraft, seemed to conclude around noon. Mike Cann, Chief of the Sproat Lake Fire Department, reported that firefighters provided initial treatment to two individuals at the scene. Subsequently, both were transported by ambulance to West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni. As of Sunday, there was no updated information on their conditions.

The missing individual from the tragic incident has been identified as Cole McPherson. The family, devastated by the loss, will release his obituary and funeral arrangements at a later date. The Sproat Lake community mourns the untimely passing of these young lives, as the circumstances surrounding the accident serve as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability inherent in water activities.
