According to actor Jason Watkins and his wife Clara Francis, a documentary about their daughter’s death will hopefully support other grieving families and raise awareness about sepsis. The ITV drama details the tragic life of Maude, who died of illness in 2011 at the age of two and a half. Watkins said their documentary was part of “trying to make things better” on BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
On Thursday, the show Jason & Clara: In Memory of Maudie aired. “I do not know others who have lost children, and it is unusual for one to lose a child,” Francis said in a statement to Radio 4. “By producing the documentary, my goal—or a one of our goals— is to discuss that feeling and, if someone watches it, to make them think, “Oh my God, I’m not crazy because that’s how I feel.”
Francis stated that she wanted to reduce the stigma associated with talking about the loss of a child. “As a parent who has just lost a child, it is disturbing to think that it could happen tomorrow at an inappropriate hospital in the UK despite our efforts and advocacy. This documentary is an attempt to improve things because we knew it would continue to be a problem given its popularity.” In the documentary, viewers saw Watkins arrive at King’s College Hospital in London to meet with Professor Akash Deep, who directs a program that teaches medical professionals to recognize the warning signs.
The film also features the actor and his wife receiving treatment and meeting other parents who have lost children, and it follows the couple as they prepare to arrive at the apartment where Maude was born and died, leaving Go.
