Scoliosis: Symptoms, Causes and Other Information

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine, common in adolescents and people with cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Despite the fact that scoliosis is relatively rare, it can lead to disability. Curvature of the spine can also reduce space on the chest and impair lung function. Uneven shoulders and waist, one shoulder blade more prominent than the other, one hip higher than the other, one side of the rib cage protruding, and one back disproportionate when leaning forward are the most common symptoms.

The main cause of scoliosis is unknown, but genetic factors play a role in its development. It can be caused by neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, birth defects affecting the growth of the bones of the spine, previous chest wall surgery in childhood, spinal trauma and infections, and spinal cord abnormalities. Although it’s common in both boys and girls, the latter are more likely to get it and may need treatment. Scoliosis can cause serious complications such as shortness of breath, back pain, and physical changes.
