After graduating from primary and secondary school, Ngige went to the University of Nigeria-Nsukka, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (BM.BCH) degree in 1979.
In 1990, he obtained a degree in Hospital Management in Peshawar, where he was introduced as a member of the Pakistan Institute of Hospital Services.
Chris Ngige’s Political Career
Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige entered Politics, becoming a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In 1999, he served as the Assistant National Secretary and Regional Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southeast Nigeria region.
In 2003, he was elected governor of Anambra State under controversial circumstances. He quickly broke ranks with his political godfather, Chris Uba, brother of Andy Uba, after an unsuccessful attempt on July 10, 2003 to get him removed from office, through a fabricated resignation letter that the state parliament accepted. In August 2005, the Electoral Court headed by Judge Nabaruma nullified Ngige’s 2003 victory. He appealed to the Federal Court of Appeals of Nigeria, but the annulment was confirmed on 15 March 2006, in a ruling awarded to Peter Obi of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). No further appeal could be made, and Ngige accepted the verdict in good faith, and appealed to the people of Anambra to support his successor. Following Peter Obi’s subsequent impeachment, Ngige attempted to run in the April 2007 gubernatorial election, but was frustrated by the federal and Independent National Elections Commission, even though after the Federal Supreme Court vacated the disqualification. In the final event, Obi’s impeachment was overturned anyway, and Obi served four years. At the time, Ngige was also heavily criticized for appearing naked at the terrifying Okija shrine during his campaign for governor.
On 6 February 2010, Ngige again ran for governor of Anambra State. Other notable politicians who have disputed him include Andy Uba, Charles Soludo, Nicholas Ukachukwu, Madame Uche Ekwunife, Ralph Nwosu, and the incumbent governor, Peter Obi. In total, there are 25 candidates for that election. Peter Obi won that election and began his second term as governor of Anambra State.
In April 2011, Ngige ran for senator of Anambra Central, on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Following voting problems in some areas of the constituency on 9 April, elections in these regions were held on 25 April and Ngige was declared the winner over the former Ministry Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili of APGA, with 69,765 votes to Akunyili’s 69,292.
Ngige’s term as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ended after his defeat in the 2015 elections to Hon. Ms. Uche Ekwunife, who was sworn in as a senator representing the Central Anambra Senate District in the current 8th Parliament of Nigeria.
On 11 November 2015, Ngige was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as Minister of Labor and Employment. In 2019, Chris Ngige was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as a returning minister to be screened by parliament. On August 21, 2019, he was sworn in as Minister of Labor and Employment by the President
On 19 April 2022, Ngige announced his interest in running for the post of President of the Republic of Nigeria under the banner of the Progressive All Peoples Congress (APC).
