Charles McFall, 75, of Richmond, VA, Legendary Collegiate football coach passes away: Obituary

Richmond, VA – Charles L. McFall Jr., a revered figure in the world of education and athletics, peacefully passed away on September 21, 2023, at the age of 75. He faced his declining health with the same courage and grace that defined his impactful and fulfilling life.

Born on May 8, 1948, in Front Royal, VA, Charles, known as Coach McFall, was a graduate of Randolph-Macon College. He was predeceased by his parents, C. Lyle and Nancy Lee Riley McFall. Throughout his 43-year career at Collegiate School, he served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and an advocate for children and colleagues.

Coach McFall’s influence extended beyond the field. As the head varsity football coach for 21 years, he led his teams to remarkable success, amassing a record of 127-66-1 and securing multiple championships. He was not only an exceptional coach but also a loyal friend, a mentor, and a true sportsman who valued fair play and competitiveness. His dedication to high school athletics went beyond records and accolades, epitomizing the values of sportsmanship, mentorship, and teamwork.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Coach McFall cherished his time away from the school. He found solace in hunting and fishing with friends and treasured family beach trips. He also built lasting relationships during his summers as a counselor at Camp Virginia.

Coach McFall’s legacy is one of purpose, decency, resilience, and humility. He treated everyone he encountered with respect, earning the admiration of the Collegiate Family and competitors alike. He deeply cared for his friends, cherished his wife Karen of 31 years, and adored his children, Martha Gray McKinney and Chuck McFall, along with his grandchildren Noah, Mason, and Indie.
