In the aftermath of the tragic shooting incident in Burnsville, Minnesota, which claimed the lives of two police officers and a fire department paramedic, a viral video on Twitter has sparked speculation regarding the alleged identity of the shooter, Shannon Cortez Gooden.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of February 18, when first responders were called to a residence on 33rd Avenue S. in response to a reported domestic abuse call. A standoff ensued, during which the gunman, barricaded inside the home with a woman and seven children, opened fire on law enforcement officers, resulting in the fatalities of Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27 years old, and paramedic Adam Finseth, aged 40. Sergeant Adam Medlicott was also injured but is expected to recover.

The alleged shooter, identified as Shannon Cortez Gooden, reportedly took his own life using the same weapon after the exchange of gunfire. A video circulating on social media purportedly shows Gooden engaging in target practice, accompanied by concerning remarks about his targets and actions.

Reports indicate that Gooden, aged 38, had a prior felony assault conviction in 2008 and had petitioned to restore his gun rights in 2020. Additionally, there are allegations of second-degree sexual misconduct against him.
While investigations into the incident are ongoing, reactions to the alleged identity of the shooter have sparked discussions online. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the gunman shot from the upper floors of the house, targeting an armored vehicle stationed outside. Despite the tragic loss of life, occupants of the house were rescued without injury.
In honor of the fallen officers, a solemn vigil was held outside the Minnesota City Hall, attended by hundreds of officers from Burnsville and neighboring cities, alongside members of the public. A procession later took place as the victims’ remains were respectfully carried, draped in the national flag.
Officer Elmstrand, a five-year veteran, was known for his dedicated service on various departmental units. Officer Ruge, who joined the department in April 2020, contributed to crisis negotiation efforts and served as a physical evidence officer. Firefighter and paramedic Adam Finseth had been serving since February 2019.
As the community mourns the loss of these brave individuals, authorities continue their efforts to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident.
